Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service Standards and specifications. The position requires two (2) years of experience in maintenance or mechanical building trades work (such as locksmith, plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical, masonry, and or HVAC/Refrigeration) under the supervision of a skilled trades worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program * ; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's license; have a motor vehicle record that is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. *Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
Brief Description of Duties: This position will be responsible for the overall maintenance and repair of all animal related equipment.
Operates machine tools, including but not limited to lathes, saws, presses, planers, drills and grinders.
Performs routine maintenance and repair of plumbing equipment and installation of new equipment by cutting, fitting and threading pipe, removing existing piping and fixtures. Locating and unclogging stoppages. Repair domestic equipment such as laundry equipment and leaks in water lines.
Performs semiskilled carpentry activities including but not limited to railings, doors, locks.
Operates shop machinery to make and assemble shelves, bookcases, tables, signs and modular furniture.
Performs semiskilled masonry repairs such as patching plaster walls and rooms.
Assist in painting and decorating work by performing interior painting of walls and rooms.
Perform routine tasks of the electrical trade, including repairing electrical equipment such as electric motors and vacuum cleaners. Install and maintain light fixtures, outlets and switches.
Cuts, welds, and brazes a variety of metal materials and equipment, manufactures standard items of sheet metal ware such as racks, carts, caging and tables.
Repairs and lubricates casters on racks and carts using appropriate grease guns and can lubricants.
Transport equipment and supplies to other buildings.
Make repairs and maintain departmental vehicles.
Autoclave equipment in accordance with DLAR protocol.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
