OverviewThe Locksmith is a member of the Facilities Operations and will have an excellent working knowledge of door hardware, door and frame construction and electro/mechanical door hardware, and be capable of carrying out installations, repairs and/or modifications to doors, locks and other related hardware with minimum oversight.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned:
- Perform all facets of the lock and key trades including repair and installation of locks, overhead and in floor closers and other related hardware. Perform various types of lock and exit device door hardware maintenance.
- Diagnose operational problems in locks and other hardware related to the door.
- Dismantle all types of locks such as padlocks, door locks, safe locks and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs and other parts.
- He/she will be provided with training so as to be able to perform basic maintenance repairs and troubleshooting of power sources and other electric/electronic devices related to the door with minimum guidance.
- Must have a high record of dependability and have the capacity to work alone.
- After-Hour Emergency Response – Must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice.
- Essential Personnel – must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence, as defined in the University’s Core Essential Policy.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

- Experienced trades-person with 5 or more years of experience beyond completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent formal training in the Locksmith field.
- Must be familiar with “SFIC” Best key systems.
- Capable of performing basic maintenance repairs and troubleshooting to electric hinges, door contacts and switches with minimal guidance
- Possess a basic understanding of low voltage devices, electric circuits and electrical safety as it relates to card access/electronic keyless locking and security systems
- Capable of performing quality installations of and repairs to doors & door frames and installations and maintenance repairs of all mechanical and electro/mechanical door hardware, hinges, door closers and other hardware related to the door with minimal supervision.
- Must possess computer literacy and have the ability to become proficient in the Maximo CMMS Software System
- Ability to understand drawings and service manuals for equipment serviced.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, oral or written, and have the ability to modify instructions to fit the situation.
Communication Skills – ability to interact with customers, supervisors and colleagues, as well as the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and perform all required coordination and the required record keeping
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent and formal training (four-year vocational school or equivalent) of considerable knowledge of the principals and practices of the locksmith trade.
