This position works under the direction of the Director of Building Maintenance and independently with responsibility for the day-to-day operations of assigned university-maintained trades. Provides leadership, direction, and discipline to assigned trade employees to enhance productivity. Ensures compliance with university policy, trade code compliance, and trade best practices.
This position is identified as Essential Staff, responsible for maintaining the core functions and operations of the university, especially during emergencies, crises, or situations that require continuity of essential services.

Minimum Required Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED AND Ten (10) years trade and technical experience with progressive independent responsibilities in construction management, installations, repairs, and troubleshooting in a commercial environment OR Five (5) years in a supervisory role.
Preferred Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED AND an associate degree or vocational school degree in Carpentry or Project Mangement AND Five (5) years trade and technical experience with progressive independent responsibilities in installations, repairs, and troubleshooting in a commercial environment AND Three (3) years in a supervisor role desired.
Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing
Must possess a valid NC Driver's License and be insurable by the university's carrier and PREFERRED one of the following: a North Carolina Locksmith License OR A North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors Building Contractor License or Limited License.
Job Duties
Responsible for providing leadership, communication, instruction, inspection, budget management, and evaluation within Carpentry, Paint, and Locksmith departments. Schedules all work assignments such as work orders, working shifts, and on-call shifts. Provides training, mentoring, and inspects workmanship of assigned trade employees. May assist staff in performing trade work, taking on-calls, and responding to emergencies.
Determines method and sequence of operations and estimates costs required to locate, install, test, repair and modify assigned trade systems by interpreting blueprints, sketches, and diagrams; following technical, verbal, written or electronic instructions; and being guided by trade practices, manufactures and underwriters' specifications, thorough knowledge, and trade theory.
Implements strategic planning developed with the Director of Building Maintenance and the Senior Director for Facilities Management. Provides communication as it relates to projects, outstanding work orders, and departmental concerns. Provides professional communications with campus customers, including faculty, staff, and students, regarding work to be completed.
Responsible for organizing safety training including toolbox talks, in-house, and professional courses. This includes OSHA required and job specific training.
