Position Summary:
The HVAC Technician (Technician) supports the Facilities and Maintenance Department and maintains all HVAC equipment, buildings, and systems at Harvey Mudd College (HMC). The Technician reports directly to the Senior Director of Plant Operations (SDPO) and will work with other maintenance technicians and maintenance lead. The Technician will respond to work requests and reports from college constituents (students, faculty, and staff) regarding repairs or other work needed in classrooms, labs, offices, dormitories, etc.; and will perform repairs to HVAC, plumbing fixtures, equipment, electrical devices and appliances as appropriate.

Salary:
The anticipated starting salary is $29.00/hour. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Duties and Maintenance Responsibilities:
Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and repairs on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including but not limited to air handlers, water source heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, A/C package units, variable air volume boxes, commercial refrigerators, etc.
Conduct minor repairs and maintenance on electrical systems including changing out breakers, performing maintenance on VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) and emergency lighting systems.
Review assigned work orders and estimates time and materials needed to complete repairs. Order necessary materials and supplies to complete all tasks and utilizes CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to manage work orders and track work order completion.
Maintain the buildings lighting systems, including element and ballast repairs or replacements.
Perform general interior maintenance including but not limited to; hanging pictures, repairing office furniture systems, and fixing minor plumbing.
Completes special tasks that include but are not limited to; painting, locksmith work, tenant services requests, and general maintenance as assigned.
Move office furniture, machinery, equipment and other materials as requested.
Perform assigned facility inspections and due diligence efforts, reporting on conditions impacting satisfactory client occupancy and operations.
Assist in inspecting buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to the Senior Director of Plant Operations.
Assist as required and cooperate with all trades personnel, building attendants, and grounds and maintenance staff in the performance of day to day duties and responsibilities.
Ensure work is performed according to manufacturer's specifications, departmental guidelines, trade practices, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
Inspect areas assigned to maintenance staff and provide assistance/guidance, as required.
Assist in addressing concerns of students, faculty, staff and visitors regarding maintenance services.
Participate in utility conservation efforts. Make recommendations for improvement.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Safety and Work Habits:
Maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meeting deadlines.
Ensure maintenance team members comply with safety rules and regulations, proper use of personal safety equipment, operation of power tools and cleaning/chemical compounds.
Maintain a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at HMC such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc.
Follow established procedures for dealing with potential hazards.
Promptly report accidents on the job, assist in preparation and submission of accident reports for the Maintenance Department.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical and other building trades and the ability to properly assess the quality of work being performed in these trades.
Must possess knowledge and technical skills required for the repair and maintenance of plumbing, heating and electrical systems, fixtures, devices and applications.
Ability to assess equipment and system problems, conduct appropriate research, draw conclusions and recommend or take action to resolve problems in a timely manner.
Must possess a strong aptitude for outstanding organizational skills, and effective written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals and equipment used in maintaining various equipment and systems on campus.
Ability to work productively, make sound decisions and effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a logical progression.
Ability to follow through and carry out assignments.
Ability to effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups.
Personal integrity and ability to interact and work successfully with individuals with varying abilities, backgrounds, interests and beliefs.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written English.
Ability to understand college policies and procedures as related to the position.
Ability to plan, organize, control, and direct all aspects of required corrective and preventative maintenance for college facilities.

Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED, or trade/technical school diploma.
Experience: Minimum of three years of commercial HVAC service and maintenance experience required.
Licenses/Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely lift 50 pounds, unassisted to waist level.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, grasp hand tools, climb ladders up to 20 feet with assistance and ten feet unassisted; ability to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to move through limited access spaces.
Must be able to satisfactorily complete a post-offer physical exam.
