ECU Facilities Services is seeking a candidate for a carpenter position for the Carpentry Shop within Building Services on Health Science Campus. This candidate will perform work for general carpentry and building repairs. This position reports to the Building Trades Supervisor and performs assigned tasks including but not limited to: Installs, maintains, and repairs wood, metal and glass door systems including mortise locksets and hinges, overhead closers, concealed vertical rod systems and exit panic devices, automatic door openers and revolving doors. Frames metal stud wall systems, using 20 and 25 gauge studs, sets door jambs, and lays out wall systems on 16-inch centers. Install and finish drywall on wall system. Maintain and repair wooden structures (bridges, fencing, gazebos, etc.) as well as exterior building (trim, facia, soffits, etc.). Lays out and installs 2' X 4' and 2' X 2' suspended ceiling grid system and maintains these systems along with acoustical tiles. Identify deficiencies, repair, and install both interior and exterior walking surfaces (carpet, VCT, ceramic tile, sidewalks, pavers, etc.). Constructs, finishes, and installs custom made cabinets, laboratory bench tops, computer modules and miscellaneous shelving. Laminates Formica surfaces and trim. Assembles and repairs manufactured furniture systems and equipment. Installs paneling, cuts, and installs moldings. Installs wall mounted items, tank brackets, pictures, bulletin boards, fixtures, and grab bars within ADA compliance. Inspect buildings for deficiencies and coordinate with supervisor on repairs. Survey and install ADA compliant signage. Apply aesthetic paint finishes throughout building infrastructure. (latex, oil, and epoxy). Position will also assist in investigating roof leaks and make minor repairs, as well as perform preventive maintenance inspections of all the various types of roofs on the University campus for any roofing issues including damage to roofing system, flashing, drainage, and debris removal. Should have general knowledge of roof systems.
This position will serve as Lead Carpenter and assist the supervisor, during their absence and other times as needed, with the following tasks (including but not limited to):
Develop and assign daily work plans within AIM for Carpenters, Painters, and Locksmiths. Review and approve daily timecards.
Provide oversight of daily maintenance operations. Communicate needs to appropriate shops or management as needed.
Prioritize maintenance issues based on level of urgency, materials available, duration of job, availability of staff, and implement a plan to resolve.
Make purchasing decisions and recommendations, regarding equipment and tools, to optimize daily operations.
Assist with coordinating activities for outside contractor projects. Includes developing scope of work, scheduling, daily oversight, etc.
Display competency in Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Power Point.
Proxy for supervisor in construction meetings, and management presentations. Obtain appropriate understanding, prior to meeting, to adequately represent.
Assist with review and processing of time and attendance records in KRONOS.
Assist with promoting good customer service support by providing a positive interface with customers and ensuring the department completes work requests in a timely manner.
Participate in interviews and selection process of new hires.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Trades supervisor.
Provides and maintains safe working conditions for the campus at all times especially as work is being performed. Complies with all safety requirements for all tasks. Safely operate and maintain equipment associated with trade. Consults/works with other trades as required to complete assigned tasks and assist as needed with all Building Trades shop activities. The employee is an essential employee for weather events and will be required to carry scheduled on-call/call-back duty.

The primary purpose of the Facilities Services Department on the Health Sciences Campus is to maintain and improve the physical plant of the Health Sciences and West Research Campuses of East Carolina University.
