The position will maintain, repair, design, and install building access control systems using blueprints on new construction and renovations. Will install conduit and raceways and set up field level network systems. The position will install and maintain CCTV as well as electrified door hardware and barrier free door systems. Provide assistance during renovation of existing or construction of new facilities by determining the requirements for locking devices and systems from blueprints, schematics or sketches, making recommendations for such systems based upon knowledge of available products, and installing or monitoring the installation of locking devices or systems on renovated or newly constructed facilities. Determines established applicable hardware specifications for locks and locking devices by interpreting hardware schedules, blueprints, plans, sketches, work orders, etc.
This position will also perform journeyperson level locksmith work requiring expertise in installing, maintaining and repairing different types of building locks including combination key cores, cylindrical, unit, mortis and rim, and reload cylinders, repairing various types of locking mechanisms and other door hardware, as well as locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers. The position rekeys buildings, installs, services, and maintains electric strikes, magna-locks, motion detectors, card readers, power supplies, circuit breakers, solenoids, transmitter wall switches, automatic door openers and controls, panic bars, door closers, and digital entry systems. Cuts new or replacement keys, picks locks for which keys have been lost or broken and makes repairs of locks as required under emergency conditions. Surveys building locks and locking systems to determine if adequate building security is provided, maintains building key code records, maintains security with respect to key codes and all mechanical security systems, maintains lock key shop security, maintains an adequate and appropriate stock of locksmith supplies and equipment, and monitors and reports maintenance issues needing attention to the appropriate authority. Maintain Master Key Systems for University security by keeping accurate records of hardware changes and new lock installations in each building, maintaining necessary lists, card files, receipts, and other records to account for combination locking devices, and repairing, maintaining and reloading cylinders for locks in the master key system.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an applicable associate degree, or equivalent education/experience.
Five years of experience in the trade that includes three years of experience in commercial locksmith access control installation, maintenance and troubleshooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification, or equivalent experience.
Must successfully complete of a trade competency test to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.
Demonstrated ability to perform work to acceptable industry standards.
Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
Expert knowledge of applicable electrical codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal).
Possession of a valid State of Michigan vehicle operator's license.
Must furnish own hand tools.
Frequent lifting of 26 to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of over 50 pounds.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of security and surveillance systems; experience with industrial and institutional hardware; knowledge of Best Key Systems.
