Position summary: Perform assigned duties associated with Locksmith Maintenance Technician III. To assist with the locks and doors maintenance repair at academic and residential buildings.
General purpose: Â Serve as senior team member in the Facilities Maintenance Technician III (Locksmith) role for the Facilities Management Department, train formally and on the job to maintain skills and certifications, and provide quality building maintenance and repair services in support of the mission of the college. Serve as a mentor and training partner with our Facilities Maintenance Technician I & IIâs on skills and training development.
Major role functions:
Execute assigned repair/work orders daily, following up as needed to ensure quality work that meets the college & industry standards
Accept training, directions and mentoring from Managers and Directors
Familiarity with all MICA buildingsâ systems and installed equipment; assist with scheduled preventive maintenance on assigned equipment as needed, both independently, with other Technicians, and with subcontractors
Required to lift, carry, push or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials; reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and crouch to gain access to spaces, and may involve both indoor and outside work and the use of hand tools and power tools associated with the building trades
Act as a primary member of the Emergency Response Team for campus emergencies
Position responsibilities:
Establish and maintain an excellent customer service driven and professional relationships with MICA faculty, staff, administration and the community; maintain a clean and professional appearance and demeanor
Weekly assignment as the Facilities primary point of contact (Facilities on Duty) for after-hours locks and doors emergencies
Installs, maintains, repairs and adjusts all types of commercial lockable hardware and their components such as doors, automatic electric door, windows, lockers and magnetic keying systems to ensure safety of campus facilities.
Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
Coordinates with card access vendors and other vendors as necessary to complete work.
Produces and/or modifies hardware for locks.
Makes new keys; replaces broken or lost keys.
Designs and maintains master key system.
Designs, modifies, and implements key inventory policies and procedures.
Designs, implements and maintains a preventative maintenance program.
Maintains appropriate service and repair records.
Cleans, maintains, adjusts, calibrates and services equipment used in the performance of duties.
Monitors work done by outside contractors for adherence to state and federal code requirements and reports back to supervisor.
May train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area.
Constantly monitors surroundings and health hazards and reports same to supervisor.
Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite.
Completes duties and responsibilities in compliance with college standards, policies and guidelines.
Uses interpersonal skills and makes sound judgments to decide how duties and responsibilities are completed between coworkers, the supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students, and customers.
Working knowledge of environmental health and safety (EHS) rules and regulations throughout the campus and assist in keeping colleagues safe.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Required, essential skills and experience:
Previous experience with doors & locks maintenance methods, maintenance materials, tools and procedures, and maintenance safety practices
Demonstrated experience in locksmith and general door maintenance
Previous experience with computers.
Previous experience with Microsoft Office
Previous experience interpreting blueprints and schematic drawings.
Previous experience diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing doors and lock systems.
Some overtime required and responds to after hour service calls in a team or in emergency situations.
Required qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Stable work or education history with excellent attendance record
Basic knowledge of safety requirements; basic knowledge of environmental health and safety; must follow safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals
Ability to perform basic math as well as read, write, and speak English to understand and communicate written/verbal instructions; willing to learn through job experience and formal training
Must work to maintain interior and exterior campus buildings & grounds
Knowledge of and familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and equipment associated with maintenance trades
Maintain a current valid Driverâs License with satisfactory driving recordÂ
Valued, but not required qualifications:
Maryland or other state Locksmith Certification
Over 5 year of practical work experience in locksmith trade or trade school experience
Extensive knowledge of locksmith equipment
Experience working in a Facilities Management Department
Experience working on a College of University Campus
Reporting to this position:Â No direct reports.

Will occasionally be required to lift and/or move heavy objects
This position is an âessential personnel,â meaning the attendance for weather related emergencies, 24-hour emergency response availability, and presence for campus emergencies is mandatory
Must be available to work various shifts and overtime as well as some holidays and weekends
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to work in various climatic conditions and around materials typically used in the making of works of art (e.g., clay, ceramics dust, fibers, wood shop areas, printmaking, painting, sculpture, drawing mediums, etc.)

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time, including outdoor heat and cold. Â The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
 Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plan & Fire Prevention, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); Asbestos Abatement, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, Lockout Tag-out, Portable Fire Extinguisher Inspection.
 Must be able to wear a respirator; additional training may be added (see: EHS Manager training schedule).
Evaluation Procedure: Conducted annually by the immediate supervisor.
