It is essential the General Trades worker is knowledgeable in all areas of both new and existing construction, and capable of operating and repairing college owned equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, snow plows, trucks, etc. The General Trades worker shall be experienced in the use of hand and power tools, and the operation of heavy equipment associated with the building trades and facilities maintenance. The employee must have a general knowledge of materials and be able to work from blueprints and drawings. The employee must perform work of a general nature, in and around campus facilities; troubleshoots, perform repairs and respond to emergency calls for service; implements setup and takedown for a wide variety of campus events; works closely with other employees and the public to complete maintenance needs of the College. This position provides support and assistance to all other classifications which may include but is not limited to: electrical, utility work, grounds, custodial, mechanical maintenance and other work of a similar nature issued at the direction of the College.
General Responsibilities include: * Install, repair, replace and maintain all building components, such as, ceilings, walls, doors, windows, etc. and the associated hardware thereof. * Install new and maintain existing floor covering, roofing, painting, masonry, locksmithing, and the repair of facilities related equipment. * Construct, install and repair shelving, cabinetry, instruction materials, and storage facilities. * Perform work covered under other trades that do not require a license or certification for code/regulatory compliance. * Execute work assignments with the safe use of typical construction and maintenance hand and power tools. * Provide automotive service to the College's vehicles and small engine repair is a large portion of the responsibilities. * Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences and events. * Assist with cleaning and tearing down furniture, moving/setting up computers, asset removal, replacing ceiling tiles, grass planting/trimming, lawn mowing (tractor and push mowers), raking leaves and signage for events. * Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. * Provide quick response to immediate safety and emergency conditions by: plowing and salting parking lots, roadways and handicap areas, salting sidewalks, aiding in snow removal, adhering to the blood borne pathogen policy, cleaning up of water or other non-hazardous waste.
REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONS: * High School diploma or GED * Associates Degree in Construction/Trade related field or 3-5 years of position related experience * Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license (CDL endorsement preferred) and maintain good driving record * Ability to attain a Fork Truck license * Ability to interact well with students, employees from all areas of the college and community members * Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision * Must be physically able to perform all duties within the classification
