HVAC Mechanic performs maintenance on heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment located in the student residential facilities on the University campus. Performs preventive maintenance on installed equipment with general supervision from a lead worker and documents the work he completes. High concentration and focus is placed on maintenance and repair of residential facilities from May through August to prepare for students return for the new academic year.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities,transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant has expanding responsibilities that include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. The Physical Plant maintains, improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, event planning, motor pool and equipment maintenance/repair, motor fleet and housekeeping services to 40 academic buildings, 15 research buildings, 15 residence halls, 19 farm buildings and 21 support facilities. Moreover, the Shops Superintendent ensures provision of services associated with development, planning, corrective, predictive, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs for carpentry, electrical, garage and motor pool maintenance, housing maintenance, HVAC, locksmith, painting and plumbing. The mission and goals of this unit is to provide physical resources necessary to maintain and support the mission and goals of the University. Moreover, Housing Maintenance is directly responsible for maintenance, repair and preventive maintenance of all student residential facilities.

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
At least four years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of commercial/industrial air conditioning chillers, air handling units, chilled water distribution and control systems, including one year of journey work level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
