ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY: Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on a scenic waterfront site in Vallejo, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1100 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. The campus currently offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Global and Maritime Studies, and Business Administration. A master's degree in Transportation and Engineering Management is offered as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Position Summary: The Enterprise Services Maintenance Mechanic is a skilled generalist, performing at a journey-level in one trade with strong skills in other trades. The Maintenance Mechanic performs a variety of skilled preventative and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work on facilities and systems.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: General Building Maintenance: Maintain and repair building furniture, fixtures and equipment. Replace light bulbs and repair fluorescent lamps. Repair cabinets and replace acoustic ceiling tiles. Repair doors, locks, doorstops, closet rods, and refrigerator shelving. Repair or replace broken windows, make minor carpet repairs, perform minor roof patching, repair ceiling tiles and bathroom tiles. Repair or replace Plexiglas light diffusers. Change heater filters. Plumbing Repairs and Modifications: Install garbage disposals and repair older ones. Repair toilet tanks and unplug toilets. Install sinks, new faucet assemblies, repair existing faucets, drains, drain plugs, risers, angle stops, aerators, pop-up washers, P.O. plugs, stems, vacuums breakers, diaphragms, packing and handles. Electrical System Repairs and Modifications: Perform all necessary work including repair and replacement of: switches, motors, brushes, bearings, armatures, handles, cords, micro switch, adjutants, clips and plugs for vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, water vacuums, space vacuums, shampooers and mechanical systems. Install floor heater control motors, squirrel cages and filters. Install fluorescent light fixtures and change ballast and tombstones. Change light switches and outlets. Repair oven control thermostats/switches. Maintain and repair outside mercury and sodium lights. Repair or install room heater thermostat controls. Reset or replace faulty circuit breakers. Repair electrical cords and plugs. Maintain silent door alarm system. Install and maintain emergency AC/DC lights. Carpentry: Build shelves and safety roofs, repair and replace cabinets, repair drawers, repair and maintain laminated shelves, repair cabinets and counter tops. Finish and hang new wooden doors and repair cracked doors. Painting: Clean, patch, sand and thoroughly prepare wall surfaces for painting using either latex or oil base enamel as appropriate. Perform all necessary finishing work on all surface types. Patch small/medium rooms, hallways and bathrooms. Locksmith: Pin, key and install building lock systems. Re-pin lock cylinders and repair lock/door knob assemblies. Cut keys; perform lock changes and repair/re-pin mailbox locks. Maintain and repair all entrance/exit doors using campus hardware. Install and repair overhead door closers. Preventative Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical facilities equipment and systems including HVAC and plumbing systems. Lead Direction: Provide lead work direction, train, and monitor the work of the Building Maintenance Worker. Provide input for the evaluation of the Building Maintenance Worker to the appropriate administrator.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.
Must be able to demonstrate journey-level skill in one trade and strong skills in other applicable trades
Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license and good driving record.
Ability to operate construction and related equipment
Ability to use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties
Must be able to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications
Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and prepare standard reports
Ability to make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work
Must be able to analyze and respond to emergency situations
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize new technology and information systems.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and tools used in one skilled trade area
Working knowledge of materials, methods, equipment and tools in related trade areas pertaining to facilities, systems, construction and renovation
Thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in trade specialty
Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems
Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations
PHYSICAL, MENTAL and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing
Operate power and hand tools and machine shop equipment
Climb and work on scaffolding, ladders, riggings
Work from personnel aerial lifts
Lift and carry materials, tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 lbs. in a safe manner
Work inside and outside with chemicals and other possibly hazardous materials and substances
Perform overhead work for extended periods of time
Work in confined spaces, above ceilings, in tunnels and crawl spaces
Work in hot, cold, humid, damp and dry indoor and outdoor conditions
Perform work in multi-story buildings without elevator access
HOURS of WORK:
Must be able to respond to emergency callbacks on matters affecting maintenance and safety.
Incumbent may be required to work over-time, including weekends and holidays, and/or shift work, based on operational needs as determined by the appropriate administrator.
