The primary purpose of this position is to be a technical resource supporting all lower grade technicians/personnel assigned to the shop in the areas of: Security, Access, CCTV, remote integrated key access controls, electrified and traditional hardware. This position must be capable of designing Card Access, Security, and CCTV system installations customized to customer/departmental need and/or requirements. This position must have the technical background and knowledge to anticipate and proactively pursue possible maintenance issues before they occur by examining systems performance, trending past performance, and applying tech notes sent or posted by equipment/system manufactures. This position must have a knowledge base of electronic system and subsystem integration, system programming manipulation, applicable industry standards, and the Federal and State laws that cover the installation and maintenance requirements of these systems. This position must also have the knowledge base to recognize and perform necessary training needs of lower grade technicians and the orientation of new technicians/personnel assigned to this area of the shop.
Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
This position requires sound knowledge in electronic technology and the ability to apply such in installation, troubleshooting and repair applications to the system and subsystem level. Familiar with the operation and use of standard electronics test equipment; ability to read and understand schematics, wiring diagrams and maintenance manuals. Must have a good working knowledge of various computer operating systems and be capable of performing training to the end users on the proper utilization and operation of the installed systems. Familiar with applicable ADA codes and security industry standards. Must be organized and capable of scheduling and overseeing the assigned workload; capable of managing, and assisting, with installations and/or modifications to: campus access, biometric access, integration of handicapped access systems, door alarms, security and other miscellaneous systems as well as standard mechanical locking type devices. Must be a technical resource to co-workers and lower grade technicians. This position provides focused support for Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs. This requires a baseline blood draw, a physical and inoculations. Entry into hot labs with an Environment, Health & Safety escort will be required, which requires wearing respiratory protection as well as annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Other general safety and technical training will be provided. Rotational emergency call back duty directly supporting BSL 2+/3 is required. The person in this position will also provide oversight to other trades supporting these labs as well. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close.
Valid North Carolina Driver License. Valid North Carolina Locksmith License or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date.
Two years of experience in the repair, replacement and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices and hardware preferably including some responsibility for circuit/system modifications. Ability to troubleshoot non-standard electronic and hardware devices or devices for which documentation is incomplete or not available.
